Nigerians have a fresh opportunity to receive ₦50,000 in federal government cash assistance as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration commences a new relief programme targeting poor and vulnerable households across the country.

The Federal Government announced the commencement of the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) on October 30, 2026, through the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.

Under the initiative, selected beneficiaries will receive ₦50,000 monthly to help them cope with rising food prices, household expenses and the increasing cost of living.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, who explained that the programme was designed to provide immediate financial assistance to millions of vulnerable Nigerians.

The programme is designed for poor and economically vulnerable Nigerian households.
According to the Ministry, beneficiaries will be selected using verified national identity records and the National Social Register.

The following groups are among those the programme is intended to support:

Unlike some previous government empowerment programmes, NERSI does not require members of the public to complete an online application form or pay registration fees.
Here is how the process works:
Step 1: Wait for an official SMS.
If selected, you will receive a text message from one of the approved payment providers:
• ALAT by Wema Bank.
• MoMo PSB.
• NairaGram.

Step 2: Confirm your selection.
The message will provide instructions for accepting the support. Follow the instructions and give your consent by replying YES or using the relevant USSD code.

Step 3: Activate your mobile wallet.
Your wallet will be linked to your registered phone number and National Identification Number (NIN).

Step 4: Receive your money.
Once the process is completed, the ₦50,000 support will be credited to your wallet. You can withdraw it through an authorised agent, transfer it to your bank account or spend it directly.

You do not need a smartphone or internet connection to complete the USSD process.

The Ministry has also warned citizens against fraudsters who may attempt to exploit the programme by advertising fake registration portals.

WHAT IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED AN SMS?
Do not panic. The payments are being distributed in phases, and not everyone will be selected in the first batch.

The absence of an SMS does not necessarily mean that you have been permanently excluded. However, there is no publicly announced open registration process through which an individual can force their inclusion.

The government says beneficiaries will be contacted directly when selected.
