Political tensions are mounting in the United States ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, following a warning by California Governor Gavin Newsom over possible federal interference in the state’s ballot-counting process.

Newsom has reportedly urged federal judges to resist any attempt by President Donald Trump’s administration to seize ballots and other election materials before California officially certifies its election results.

The dispute centres on a federal investigation into allegations of non-citizen voter registration in California. The Justice Department has sought access to state election records, claiming that thousands of non-citizens may have been registered to vote.

However, California officials and election experts have questioned the reliability of the information being used to support the allegations. The federal government has not established how many individuals on the disputed list actually voted.

The controversy has already entered the courts. A federal appeals court rejected an administration request on Friday, while another federal judge ordered the Justice Department to stop threatening prosecution against California election officials who refuse to comply with its demands.

Newsom fears that federal agents could use warrants to disrupt the lawful counting and certification of votes.

With Americans preparing to vote on Tuesday, November 3, the dispute has become another major test of relations between Washington and state election authorities.

Why it matters: The controversy raises important questions about election transparency, federal authority, state independence and public confidence in democratic institutions.
